An exclusive resident of the wetlands of Rhodes is the Rhodes minnow (scientific name “Ladigesocypris ghigii – Pisces Cyprinidae”), a small freshwater fish living in Rhodes springs and streams.
It is a small fish, of a maximum of length 10-12 centimeters, which has the reputation of a resilient organism that can withstand sudden climatic changes and very low winter temperatures or very high summer temperatures.
The Rhodes minnow is an endagered species and protected by both Greek and European legislation. The Rhodes minnow dwells in the area of Gadouras dam and for this reason when necessary, the ecological flow opens and the surrounding area of the dam is fed with water from the reservoir of Gadouras.
