Until 2015 the major part of the island of Rhodes was supplied with water from a network of wells.
The overuse and excessive exploitation of water resources has resulted in a severe drop of groundwater levels and very soon led to brackish water inflow in several areas of the island.
The construction of the dam at Gadouras torrent in the middle of the island managed to solve the important and crucial water supply problems of the wider Rhodes urban area, of all the coastal settlements on the east and northwest side of the island as well as the neighboring arid islands such as Halki, Symi, Kastellorizo and others.
